as much love as there is for tootoo, he has to clean up his act and stop leaping into hits for one thing, then he'll get a lot more sympathy. i've seen reels on hdnet and the fsnd boys love showing him taking 3+ steps into every hit, but he'd hit hard regardless of the steps the bigger concern is him leaping into his. so point is, if he had a better reputation as a player, there'd be no guff on robidas. hitting modano was fine with me, not like he was trying to kill him i mean, jordin's on the damn energy line, 95% of his job is to grind out top line guys
I agree with you on this. It was an unfortunate accident that resulted only because one player charged directly into another player's punch. If Robidas hadn't been knocked out (and let's face it, if he weren't charging Tootoo he wouldn't have been), if this hadn't come so close on the Simon suspension, if Tootoo didn't have a rep, and if it hadn't involved Modano on one of the biggest nights of his career, nobody would be talking about this at all. Though it is interesting that not many people are talking about Modano slashing Tootoo across the back. That was just plain dirty.
1) jordin wasn't in a position to be hurt by taking a hit from robidas
2) there's absolutely no excuse for giving a football stiff arm to the face just because you don't want the retaliation hit for taking out the [de facto] captain, same as there's no excuse for simon. and jordin took 4 steps into his hit on modano which is of course a blatant charge
3) mike wasn't suspended bc he's not stupid, he put his stick where pads are + it didn't hurt jordin 1 bit
So you're saying that slashing is ok as long as the player doesn't think he'll hurt anyone?
no, not bc think, bc he didn't hurt him.
So should penalties only be assigned if someone is hurt?
Let me also point out that if Tootoo had jerked backwards at the last second, that stick could have very well come down on the back of his neck. Aiming for the pads only works if the other player doesn't move.
i'd say "leave it to a predators fan to drive the slippery slope based on nothing discussed previously" but sabres fans are worse.
i don't care if tootoo could have moved his head a little to the left and took it on the face, the ear, the collar bone. the league doesn't either and rightly so. penalties only if someone's hurt? get real, that's not what i'm saying at all. jordin did a charge on modano that would be called if refs didn' have their heads up their asses on what charging is, then he sucker punched modano's defender, then modano thankfully not hurt defends unconscious robidas. tootoo is not injured whatsoever. jordin has been in the league as this type of role player long enough to know that he is going to take a lot of hits bc of what he delivers, and he is being punished for losing it. modano's not going to be punished bc by the hockey gods, he's defending robidas. sure, the preds started long after the custom was a stiff stick anywhere in defense of your guy, but by the hockey gods there is nothing wrong with modano giving tootoo a whack on the back.
No, you are literally saying that Modano shouldn't have gotten a penalty because he didn't hurt Tootoo, even though slashing is illegal. Yes, Tootoo was in the wrong, and yes, he deserves punishment. But so does Modano. Because slashing is illegal.
you know damn well that if tootoo would've been cracked in the head and concussed modano would have been suspended regardless of the fact he was defending robidas. since he wasn't, no suspension. that's all there is to it.
And what was the reason he didn't get a penalty? Modano served absolutely nothing for slashing another player. The refs had to have seen it, since that area was the center of attention for the entire arena when he did it. There is no reason at all that Modano shouldn't have served a penalty for slashing.
It should not matter if Tootoo was injured. Swinging a stick FOR ANY REASON is against the rules. It's nice to see the NHL show special treatment for Mr. I can't feed my dogs on such a small salary. Eff him.
yea, special treatment to the guy who didn't sucker punch someone in defense of himself. mike did right by the hockey gods, like it or not, standing up for robidas
